The Well Review

The Well directed by Federico Zampaglione stars Lauren LaVera, and Claudia Gerini. Lisa is traveling to Italy to restore an ancient painting damaged in a fire. She is the daughter of a renowned art restorer. Lisa is in for the job of her life as the painting has a dark and evil meaning. Lisa meets some fellow Americans heading to the same town.

Lisa arrives to begin to work on the artwork she is told of the rush time frame and what will happen if she does not meet it. She begins to work on this painting she starts to uncover some dark images. She is put into a trance-like state she has a vision of something evil after her. Lisa cuts herself during the restoration splashing blood on the artwork.

Lisa is now plagued with something haunting her dreams she is starting to sense something is not right with this painting. She was told by the daughter of the painting owner to run and get away. She explains the painting is cursed and she will also become cursed. Her mother comes in to get her and dismisses the story to Lisa.

The Americans Lisa meets never show up for the drinks they planned on. They met a fate tied to the work Lisa was working on. Taken in the middle of the night and put into a dungeon with a well in the center just not for water. Something inhuman is down there and must be fed. The time is winding down for the artwork to be done. A red moon is the key to the ritual and must be finished.

In a film that hit all the marks for me, the story was strong. The way the painting played such a vital role and the curse behind it. I give this one an 8 out of 10 Lauren LaVera’s role as Lisa was flawless. My only issue was a bit more backstory on the big butcher killer in the Well area. The cinematography and locations added that layer of creepiness and evil vibe to set the mood. The ending is a twist I did not see coming but fell in perfectly to end the film.
