February 24, 2023 – Music From Ireland is pleased to announce a number of Irish artists showcasing at this year’s SXSW Music Festival in Austin, TX. These artists span a wide array of genres and are some of the country’s most exciting up and coming acts.
The Music From Ireland Showcase will take place on Thursday, March 16 at 8PM at The Velveeta Room, with Full Irish Breakfast to follow on Friday, March 17 at 12pm, hosted with The Dead Rabbit at 601 Congress Ave. Performers across both days will include:
  • Junk Drawer – Incorporating the imprint of Krautrock, post-punk, and psychedelia, Belfast’s Junk Drawer’s intuitively loose and idiosyncratic brand of indie rock mines anthems from their crate-digging tendencies. Featuring four multi-instrumentalists & vocalists fluid in their roles, they’re driven by the harmony and discordance that comes from a sibling creative rivalry at the helm, and remain one of the most dynamic, exciting bands you’ll catch live.
  • Lauren Ann – A mix of grunge dynamics, garage rock exuberance and dreamy pop edge influences her music and writing style. Growing up listening to artists such as Nirvana, Pixies and The Cure Lauren finds a way to shine this through her own music making her tracks refreshing yet nostalgic to listen to, perfect for those missing the 90’s.
  • Sorcha Richardson – Greeted by critical acclaim from Nylon, The Irish Times, DIY and more, comparisons were made with Julien Baker, Phoebe Bridgers et al, leading to a nomination for the Choice Music Prize. Coupled with her first bout of proper touring in support of her debut, Sorcha’s narrative songwriting has continued to connect with people far away from her Dublin home, giving songs to those who have shared similar tangled emotions, providing a tonic with her music.
  • The Scratch – Started as a fun experiment in the kitchen of a house in Perrystown, The Scratch are a 4-piece act from Dublin, Ireland. Born from a shared love of guitar, metal and traditional Irish music, The Scratch have moulded triumphant melodies with the groove and intensity of metal. You will not have seen anything like this band.
  • modernlove. – With larger than life indie-pop anthems born of small town boredom, coming of age, big nights out and young love gone wrong, modernlove are a new generation’s brightest hope – already racking up streams in their millions and selling out shows, simply by singing about what they know and having a good time doing it. From playing dingey rural pubs to working with super-producer Luca (of Arlo Parks and Lana Del Rey fame), this Irish band of young 20-somethings are about to show the world the true heights of their ambition.
  • milk. – milk. are a four-piece alternative pop band based in Dublin and are a group very much entrenched in the technology of their time, making music for a rapidly evolving world, where the confines of genre do not concern the listener beyond a means of categorization – their body of work is to be processed in the same way as one’s favourite playlists, varied and colourful, with pop sensibilities featuring alongside subdued RnB with electronically-tinged production.
  • M(h)aol – Irish intersectional 5 piece M(h)aol have hit the ground running in 2022. Since releasing their debut EP ‘Gender Studies’, the band have performed at Primavera, Green Man, Latitude, and End of the Road, toured Europe with Gilla Band and Shellac, and more.
  • Somebody’s Child – A groundbreaking voice in the Dublin music scene, Somebody’s Child has fast become one of the hottest prospects in Ireland, with early singles receiving enthusiastic support from national radio (RTE Rising Artist 2020). An appearance on The Late Late Show followed, as well as an opening slots for Primal Scream and Kaiser Chiefs at Dublin’s 3Olympia Theatre and 3Arena respectively.
  • Silverbacks – In years from now, anyone seeking to make sense of what life was like during a global pandemic should extend their research beyond the newspaper clippings and dive into the art produced during the period. Archive Material – the aptly-titled second album by Dublin-based art-rock quintet Silverbacks – will make for a particularly illuminating listen on the subject. Capturing the absurd mixture of monotony and creeping disquiet experienced by many of us this past 18 months, it’s simultaneously sobering and wickedly droll.
  • Aoife Nessa Frances – Aoife Nessa Frances is a singer-song writer and multi-instrumentalist from Ireland whose sophomore album ‘Protector’ was released via Partisan records on 28th October 2022. In spring of 2020, Frances moved out of the city for the first time in her life. After packing up her things in Dublin, she moved to rural County Clare on the west coast of Ireland, and there, amidst the stillness, she worked on the songs that would become her second album, Protector. The resulting body of work deftly juxtaposes golden hours and arguments, affection and alienation, and above all marks a crucial period of her life that was transformative and left her wiser.
  • Ailbhe Reddy – Ailbhe Reddy has a talent for crafting intensely moving alt-folk tunes. The Irish artist has been making huge waves since she released her first EP in 2016 and released her sophomore album Endless Affair this March via MNRK.
