Interview:

How did you get your start in music?

Well, except for Lenny and John that were playing and studying music before they could even walk, the other three of us got into that relatively “late”, in our teens we’d say that’s when we first picked up an instrument (Tolly, Mick). Chris discovered he had a kickass voice even later by winning a karaoke contest. As a band, fate pretty much brought us all together. Mick and Tolly met at a party and started immediately talking about music and they even played a couple of songs together for the entertainment of the group. A year after that they started looking for the other members. The word spread and soon enough it was five of us. We decided to call ourselves Poison Heart and started rocking out covers of our favorite songs to see how we fit as a band. Not long after that we had our first song and our first few gigs. So yeah, fate and a shared dream is what brought this band together and it is going to take a lot for us to give up on that dream.

What type of music did you listen to while growing up?

We all start out from the same stuff, don’t we? A bit of ACDC, bit of Zeppelin, a little bit of this and that, the classics, but eventually brunch out. Lenny has the biggest taste for metal than all of us combined. First few rehearsals he was ripping off blast-beats and we were like “Damn dude…might wanna take it down a notch”. John has always been a die-hard Alice in Chains fan and die-hard is an understatement. Mick and Tolly share mostly the same tastes. Guns and Roses, Ratt, Motley Crue, you know the signature 80’s sound. The 80’s sound has the soul and the attitude that we’re looking for. Also, Tolly is really into neoclassical which brings a whole new different concept into what we do. Chris is the simplest we think. He mostly sticks to his vocal idols (Freddie Mercury and Bruce Dickinson) but regardless of what style he chooses to adopt, his voice and how he adapts to anything we do is nothing short of impressive. Overall, you’ve basically got five different music backgrounds that we always try and tie together. That challenge has been more fun than anything and we think we’re doing a good job at that, but you can always listen for yourselves.

What are fun stories you can share while you’re in the studio recording music?

We can’t say we’ve had much recording experience; we only just released our debut single, Doctor Love, and are currently working on our debut album. When recording vocals, we were all in the booth singing and at some point, we all shared a look and a stupid grin appeared on our faces. We were so damn happy to do that you know, recording material we are proud of, and moreover doing that with four of your closest friends you know? Not exactly a funny story, but one of the happiest memories for sure. However, we have plenty of fun ones when it comes to writing music. We rehearse at a studio where we have the luxury to spend the entire day there if we want to, so you know we got a lot of time on our hands to chill, play and compose. Aside from the jokes that are always present and never fail to get a laugh, after countless hours of practicing, composing and whatnot, it’s only natural you get tired, so eventually we’ll start messing around. We create our own covers of other songs, essentially changing the genre of a song completely and just going with it. Other times we just bring in a synth and start playing, well there’s no other way to put it, traditional Balkan music. It’s like a full-on Balkan fare and we can keep that up for hours.

What is your latest song or album you can share with us?

We just released our debut single “Doctor Love” on all platforms along with the video clip on YouTube. We’ll soon be ready to share our debut album as well, which we’re not gonna reveal what’s it called. You’ll have to stick around for that!
