Black’s Myth – An Ahoy Comics Review

By: John C. Mayberry

Speaking as a comic book nerd who also enjoys a good sleuth story once in a while, I absolutely love it when a creative team takes the noir-esque feel of a detective story and applies it to comic full of memorable characters and stunning visuals.  And once again Ahoy Comics delivers the goods with the five issue limited series Black’s Myth.  The title alone is enough to catch the attention of any reader, like it did mine, but once I opened that cover to an image of someone nursing a gunshot wound on page 1, I knew I was in for something special.

After seeing the cover art, you’re given the perfect vibe of what to expect before even reading this series, as it exudes an air of noir and mystery that will make you increasingly curious as to what this story is all about, with black and white interior art adding a further emphasis to the mystery as it gradually unfolds before your eyes.  And as the story progresses, you will also be presented with a bit of a twist in that a supernatural element is also added, which not only makes the story more intriguing, but is sure to appeal to a wider range of readers as well.  But we cannot let the artwork, as incredible as it is, take all the credit for the story as the superb writing creates character interactions that feel completely normal and natural.  Well, as normal and natural as interacting with supernatural beings can be anyway.

Bummed out to have read the fifth and final issue, I really would have loved to see more of this series.  But as short as it may be to some, there’s absolutely no denying that Black’s Myth panned out like a great murder mystery. Complete with character interactions that feel completely natural and unforced, especially those amongst supernatural beings, great character designs and just all-around fantastic artwork, this is a comic I’m glad to have read and reviewed for the masses here, and I sincerely hope whomever of you picks this comic up comes to love it as much as I do.
