Italia Music Export is pleased to announce a number of Italian based artists showcasing at this year’s SXSW Music Festival in Austin, TX. These artists span a wide array of genre’s and are some of the country’s most exciting up and coming acts.
Ciao SXSW! The Italian Showcase will take place on Thursday, March 16 at 8PM at Stay Put (73 Rainey St.) with performances by
Arya – an Italo-Venezuelan singer and songwriter. She is part of Atelier 71, an independent collective and music label based in Milan. Her style is warm and smooth, her lyrics are introspective; she freely moves between nu soul and rap, hip hop and R&B. Her 2021 debut album, Peace of Mind, saw much success both from the critics (Rockol, I-D Italy, DLSO, Rockit, Radio Capital, Radio Bertallot) and the public. Check out the video for the single “Feelings In Disguise”.
Big Mountain County – a psych rock band based in Rome, born after the meeting of four boys from different cities in southern Italy. They immediately found a feeling in navigating through screaming guitars and melodic riffs reminiscent of Stooges, Velvet Underground, MC5 and Joe Spencer. Their most recent release ‘Klaus’ found them taking a more experimental approach and is available for streaming on all music platforms.
GIUNGLA – the moniker of Ema Drei, an Italian-born singer-songwriter based in Milan. GIUNGLA is fast developing a reputation for her breathtaking and visceral live show. She’s played alongside The xx, Foals, Grimes, Franz Ferdinand, Mura Masa, Let’s Eat Grandma and Battles as well as being invited to play at numerous festivals across Europe and North America. After collaborating on a couple of singles with producer Luke Smith (Depeche Mode, Foals, Anna Of The North), she teamed-up with Andrew Savours, known for his work with My Bloody Valentine, The Kills, Black Country New Road, and she’s currently working on her album. Stream her single “Turbulence”.
Baseball Gregg – an indie pop duo from Stockton (California) and Bologna (Italy). Founders Luca Lovisetto and Samuel Regan met in Bologna, the former a native of the city and the latter a Math student studying abroad. Here, their first songs took shape and were recorded in a flurry of late spring nights, eventually becoming the duo’s self-titled debut EP, Baseball Gregg. The band’s most recent release, ‘Pastimes’ (2022), was called, “one of the year’s best albums (Week In Pop)”. The band released ‘Selected Covers (2016-2022)’, which can be streamed now.
Dumbo Gets Mad – a psychedelic pop project based in Italy and heralded by publications like Stereogum, Vice, Pitchfork, and NPR. They’ve released four albums, one of which being ‘Thank You, Neil’ inspired by astrophysicist, author, and science communicator Neil deGrasse Tyson. Their most recent album ‘Things Are Random and Time Is Speeding Up’ was released in 2021.
Sans Soucis – Born out of a desire to reconnect with the uninhibited joyfulness and authenticity of childhood that all of us lose as we grow older, their music is a radical act of reclamation. Receiving praise from The Guardian, Paper Mag, The Independent, Fader, The Forty-Five, Pitchfork and more, it combines elements of Congolese Rumba, classic Italian songwriting, electronic R&B and alt-pop sounds. Accolades include the Music Music Moves Europe ‘Grand Jury’ prize, inclusion in Spotify’s global RADAR campaign, and Ticketmaster’s breakthrough artist for 2023. Recent performances include shows at Cross The Tracks, All Points East, Pitchfork Paris, Eurosonic, and supporting Rina Sawayama in Milan. Watch the music video for “All Over This Party”.
“We’re very excited to return to SXSW after 3 years, showcasing some of the most promising talents the Italian scene has to offer,” says Italia Music Export in a joint statement. “Italian music has witnessed a significant growth in popularity in recent years, both locally and internationally: we’re talking about Måneskin of course, but also about many innovative and exciting Italian artists who are performing abroad more and more often. Some of them will play at SXSW, so don’t miss the unique opportunity to listen to the impressive live performances by Big Mountain County, Giungla, Baseball Gregg, Dumbo Gets Mad, Arya, Sans Soucis, KOKO, Big Cream, Her Skin, prim, and The Wends.”
