The SEEKERS OF THE AWETO Graphic Novel Review

I have read a lot about history in comics and graphic novels but none like this graphic novel. In my mind, I never realized their was a medieval China with stories that have been passed down for generations. Nie Jun has created this graphic novel to showcase the stories from his homeland in China and give us a glimpse of what was medieval China.

I couldn’t put down this graphic novel as I was hooked hard!

The art wow! I never seen art like that used in this graphic novel. I don’t read Manga or watch Anime much but these felt the art is a mixed of both. The artist gave an amazing representation for a story in Medieval China that just screamed to be read and learn of its story.

I don’t want to spoil much but this story is fantastic! This has my imagination thinking of what else has happened in Medieval China that not only shaped their ancestors but gave us a view of their beliefs during that time and age.

Here is the review:

Pro:

  • Story
    • The Hunt is On! Xinyue, his brother and mother are Aweto seekers that go to villages to find Aweto and then sell them at the market. In the story, a single Aweto can cure everyone’s sickness which makes them very valuable. While raiding a village with their insects, they were able to find an Aweto. Before leaving Xinyue meets a chadolo and finds out it has a baby. Xinyue becomes its “papa” and the Chadolo wants him to take care of its baby. Xinyue doesn’t want it but still holds onto the small chadolo baby. Then feeling like a failed warrior, Princess Huoxun vows to bring back the chadolo baby for their village. While at the market, Xinyue’s brother figured out he has the prized Celestial Aweto and a fight breaks out! Man oh man, this is a fantastic!
  • Watercolor Art
    • The watercolor art brought the story to life with various images that are waved throughout each page. The various use of colors to showcase medieval China was fascinating. My imagination was in overload as I felt this gave the graphic novel a different flavor in terms of the history using images. The artist used a different way of art to convey the message yet stayed with its roots from the historical point. I digged this hard!
  • Medieval China
    • I am a big fan on history in the medieval times and I realized I haven’t read much about China during that time. This graphic novel gave a glimpse of stories that are passed down for generations that I never knew about. I enjoyed reading this story and enjoyed the small things that the author included such as the Silk Road, walking to the market and much more. Nie Jun gave us a glimpse of the stories he has heard and its fascinating!

Con:

  • More Just More!
    • This really isn’t a con but I have to say, I want more! I want more of the fantastic story, colorful art, and the humor. I know this is book 1 for the series, but I want to read all of them at the same time to see the whole story. I’m just so captivated by the art and the story. I’m hooked!

Rating: 9 out of 10
