NEW MULTI-SENSORY WELLNESS EXPERIENCE BY ART COLLECTIVE MARSHMALLOW LASER FEAST TAKES AUDIENCES ON AN IMMERSIVE JOURNEY INTO THE AMAZON RAINFOREST

The latest installation by internationally renowned art collective Marshmallow Laser Feast (MLF), Forest Bathing, Lapuna, has now opened at Therme Euskirchen, of Thermengruppe Josef Wund, in Germany. The multi-sensory experience, developed in collaboration with architecture and experience designer TheLoveTriangle, invites the public to walk through a waterfall and embark on an immersive journey into the heart of the Amazonian rainforest. The work marks a new form of wellbeing through encouraging a deeper connection to our natural world. Commissioned by the Josef Wund thermal spa group, and strategically supported by Wellness Innovation Consultancy White Mirror, the immersive spaces which make up Forest Bathing, Lapuna were unveiled on 22 March 2024, and will be a permanent feature of the wellness offering at Therme Euskirchen.

With a visual narrative compressing 24 hours in the Amazon rainforest into a 24-minute experience, Forest Bathing, Lapuna invites viewers to open their senses and rediscover the understated conversations between humans and the rest of nature, through scent, touch, sight and sound. Inspired by the ancient Japanese tradition of ‘Shinrin-yoku’ – which translates as ‘forest bath’ and is scientifically documented as one of the best practices for physical and mental well-being – the work creates an open-eyed meditation that invites audiences to lie down, look up and bathe in the natural beauty of the tropical rainforest as they journey through a day in its’ life.

After stepping through a physical waterfall into a tropical downpour where rain machines and spatial audio saturate the senses in white noise – a sensory cleansing – participants are invited to recline in temperature-controlled and vibroacoustic circular furniture that imitate lily-pads, and gaze upwards at a projection depicting a kapok (lupuna) tree, set against the Amazonian sky. Three video artworks transport spa guests into the heart of a rarely seen unfolding of nature, showing the symbiotic relationship between the towering lupuna tree and the ‘Queen of the Night’ flower housed high within its branches. By immersing themselves fully in this rich and biodiverse ecosystem, visitors see themselves as part of nature itself and explore the symbiotic connections among life’s kingdoms that cannot exist without each other.

This new work draws on the wealth of Marshmallow Laser Feast’s internationally acclaimed artworks that look to illuminate hidden connections beyond our everyday perception and remind us of our inseparability to the natural world. Employing a wealth of creative disciplines that span design, digital media, performance and sculpture, MLF invites audiences to navigate new sensory perspectives.

Technologically innovative, Forest Bathing, Lapuna combines 5k projection, a 55-speaker spatial sound environment, temperature control, bespoke scent design and water-based architecture. Pushing the frontier of sensory input, the experience aims to transport audiences into an amplified essence of the rainforest to create a sense of presence and a deep multi-sensory meditation.

Barnaby Steel, one of Marshmallow Laser Feast’s three creative directors, says: “Modern life pours into us through our senses and this bombardment forces us to shut down the full spectrum of our sensitivity. The immersive artworks we make tickle the senses back out of their shells, like a fresh lettuce to a snail. Then we unleash the salad dressing. The realisation that a forest is inseparable from you, that plants, pollinators and people are woven into relationships is central to the work. As our gut bacteria are to us, so are we to the body of the earth. This project takes you deep into your forest body.”

Ramy Elnagar, White Mirro’s co-founder, comments: “This innovative concept goes beyond traditional wellness approaches by integrating immersive technologies with sensory science. It’s a testament to how digital advancements can be harnessed to improve well-being, offering a new dimension to therapeutic experiences, igniting a movement towards holistic, scientifically-validated wellness spaces. This isn’t just a development; it’s a landmark.”
