Today we sat down with Toshin to discuss her music inspiration, music growing up and of course advice for future musicians. After the interview, check out her music below!

Here is the interview:

What is your inspiration to write your music? Is it your surroundings?

Most of the lyrics I write come from my own life experiences. I’ve come across my fair share of characters, obstacles and emotions, and I try to write as much about my own life as I can. I get a lot out of this personally, but also I feel most connected to the music when I’m singing about something I really care about or something I’ve felt. I like to think that our music, and my experiences that find their way into our songs, help to connect with our audience, as I’m sure I’m not the only one who’s experienced these things!

What type of music did you listen to growing up?

Growing up I listened to lots of different genres, from soul to afro pop to rock – the list goes on! But my favourite artists to listen to were definitely Bruno Mars and Aretha Franklin. They inspired me a lot and gave me the motivation to become a musician.

Is there someone you looked up as a hero?

I look up to Aretha Franklin, and Taria who is the lead singer of Tank and the Bangas. They are both vocal queens but also super down to earth and humble artists. They inspire me everyday to keep pushing on with music regardless or what’s going on in the world. I hope one day I can be even half as talented as they are.

If you weren’t a musician, would you be doing today?

If I wasn’t a musician I would have gone down the catering route. I love to cook and create dishes from scratch. My mum is also a caterer and a baker which would have made that route a lot easier for me.

What advice do you have for our fans out there that want to create music?

The biggest advice I would have is just to go for it and never give up! Despite all the obstacles you face there is always a light at the end of the tunnel. I failed to get into music college twice before I finally passed and started my degree. Life will always throw challenges at you and it’s down to not let the challenges take over and overcome and be the best you can be!
