Today, we sat down with god.i.am to talk their inspiration to write music, advice for musicians (best advice for a musician I’ve heard in YEARS!), and much more. Be sure to check out the music from god.i.am on Spotify below after the interview!

Interview:

What is your inspiration to write your music? Is it your surroundings?
No, not for me. My inspiration comes from within. Be it a riff, drum part, or a thought that directly applies to my writing style. I am a Solo musician and Poet, and god.i.am is my Solo Doom Metal project. So, because I am a multi-instrumentalist, vocalist, and writer, I am the only songwriter/musician that’s ever involved in the writing process. I played all of the instruments on my Debut album and did all of the vocals. And I did all of my guitar work with ONLY my 5 string bass. My Debut album called “hanc aeternum, infinitum nihil 23.23” is currently streaming on all major platforms.

What type of music did you listen to growing up?
My parents listened to a lot of old school country music and some classic rock, so we listened to a lot of those styles. I got into Heavy Metal when I was in High School.

Is there someone you looked up as a hero?
My Mom. She raised 4 kids almost by herself, because my Dad was a career military man and wasn’t around very much. We all turned out well, and I credit her for that.

If you weren’t a musician, would you be doing today?
Well, I didn’t let music stop me from having a career as a Law Enforcement Officer and City firefighter. Today, I’m happily retired from both, and I’m steadily making music. So it all worked out.

What advice do you have for our fans out there that want to create music?
Follow your heart, and tell anyone that tries to talk you out of it to Fuck Off!
