Epic Cinematic Spectacle Ben-Hur Celebrates Its 60th Anniversary by Returning to Movie Theaters on April 14 and 17 in the TCM Big Screen Classics Series

  • WHAT: Massive in scale, cast, story and budget, Ben-Hur is the kind of film they literally don’t make anymore, an analog-era feat that was unprecedented in its day and perhaps has never been equaled. Ben-Hur will be presented in cinemas for two days only – April 14 and April 17 – along with TCM Primetime Host Ben Mankiewicz‘s fascinating insightful pre- and post-show commentary on the film, which is celebrating its 60th anniversary. Playing in more than 600 theaters nationwide, Ben-Hur will be digitally projected in its original super-widescreen “Ultra 65” format. An epic award-winner, director William Wyler‘s classic received 11 Academy Awards, more than any other film to that point (and still tied with Titanic and The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King). The production encompassed 300 sets, nine sound stages and consumed 1.1 million feet of film, yet never loses sight of its compelling story of Jewish prince (Charlton Heston) who vows revenge when he is enslaved by his Roman childhood friend (Stephen Boyd). Jack HawkinsHaya Harareet and Hugh Griffiths also star in the film, which grossed the equivalent of nearly $1 billion upon its release.
