Released to widespread critical acclaim in November, New Blue Sun is an entirely instrumental album centered around woodwinds. Co-produced by Benjamin and lauded multi-instrumentalist Carlos Niño, and featuring the playing of Nate Mercereau, Surya Botofasina, Deantoni Parks, Diego Gaeta, Matthewdavid, V.C.R, Diego Gaeta, Jesse Peterson, and Mia Doi Todd, New Blue Sun is a celebratory piece of work in the form of a living, breathing, aural organism
While an instrumental woodwind-focused album may strike some as an unexpected creative departure for Benjamin’s first solo album, he hopes audiences are immersed in the cinematic experience in a way that’s similar to his process in creating New Blue Sun: “It’s therapeutic to be in that setting and playing and having to be fully in the moment,” he says. “Don’t think about the future, don’t think about the past. There’s something about knowing that this was created without any of the people knowing what was coming. It’s just beautiful to hear a natural happening.”
New Blue Sun became the first instrumental album to land on the Billboard Top 200 Chart and the opening track “I Swear, I Really Wanted to Make a ‘Rap’ Album But This Is Literally the Way the Wind Blew Me This Time,” broke the record for longest song to debut on the Billboard Hot 100.
