Not Your Mother’s Hair Band: Review of Steel Panther at the Aztec Theater

3 words that can sum up a Steel Panther show: sex, drugs and rock ‘n’ roll. Steel Panther isn’t your mother’s hair band. I would say not your father’s hair band, but if your dad is like mine, he enjoys yacht rock and James Taylor. Unlike the hair metal bands of the 80s, Steel Panther says exactly what they mean with their song lyrics. They don’t lace their songs with sexual innuendos like “pour some sugar” they are asking to “cum in.”

With a stage persona as big as their hair, Steel Panther turns it up to 11. After all the 80s are back, right? Grab the leggings, tease that hair and prepare for the experience that is Steel Panther.

Seriously though, don’t knock their on-stage personas and the flashiness of the show. Their level of musicianship is immense (Satchel absolutely shreds). Along with epic musical talents, they have what other bands nowadays often lack…stage presence and audience interaction.

As a self-proclaimed music nerd, I have been to my fair share of shows, but this experience was unlike any other. Often when I go to shoot shows, the band is usually on stage playing their music, and then off the stage, once the time is up (a very wham bam thank you ma’am situation). Steel Panther talks to their audience and engages with them to ensure their spectators are having as much fun as they are on stage. I found myself behind the lens of my camera, headbanging and embracing the moment. The atmosphere was filled with pure joy and Aquanet, people were there to have a good time.

You can’t deny they know how to show you a good time. Their music is non-political, slightly raunchy (for some) and pure hair metal flare.
