Los Angeles, CA – Natalie Del Carmen, one of Americana’s burgeoning stars, has released an inspired reinterpretation of The Shins’ beloved track “Gone For Good.” Following her acclaimed sophomore album Pastures, Del Carmen returns with her first official release since the record, transforming the indie gem through rich country-western arrangements and grounded storytelling. “Gone For Good” is out now on all digital streaming platforms worldwide via Torrez Music Group.
Originally written by The Shins’ James Mercer, “Gone For Good” has remained a generational touchstone since its 2003 release. In her rendition, Natalie Del Carmen leans into the song’s emotional undercurrents with sweeping pedal steel, smoky electric guitar swells, and warm piano textures. Produced by multi-time ACM nominee David Dorn (Ella Langley, Luke Bryan, Kelsea Ballerini) and Alex Torrez (Braxton Keith, Gabe Lee, Sophie Gault), the track bridges indie melancholy with timeless storytelling while expanding the original into a darker, country-western sonic world. Del Carmen’s aching vocal performance gives a new dimension to lyrics centered on emotional exhaustion, drifting away from inadequate love, and realizing some relationships are simply not meant to endure. “‘Gone For Good’ is a legendary piece of writing, and James Mercer deserves all his flowers,” Del Carmen shares. “This song hits every marker that a good song can for me. In a confession of leaving a draining, unfulfilling relationship, desiring freedom, and realizing you’ll probably never marry that woman, it’s simply great. We brought this version further into country western with a lot of pedal steel work and dark electric guitar hits, honoring an indie classic by The Shins from a Gen Z western female perspective.”
Though Del Carmen was born just two years before the song’s original release, its impact has remained deeply woven into her life and artistic identity. “I was born two years before this song came out in 2003, but it carries through generations like the best songs do,” she explains. “If it comes on in the car, nobody’s skipping, and Millennials and Gen Z’ers become the same person for a moment. That’s law. ‘Gone For Good’ has soundtracked the most pleasant and unpleasant moments of my life. Many I would die to live again, and others I pray I never meet twice.” The release features contributions from Jason Roller (acoustic guitar), Sol Philcox-Littlefield (electric guitar), Rusty Danmyer (pedal steel), David Dorn (piano, FX), Tim Denbo (bass), and Dave Racine (drums and percussion). The track was mixed by GRAMMY-award-winning producer Brandon Bell (Brandi Carlile, Joni Mitchell, Allison Russell, Alison Krauss) and mastered by the esteemed Eric Conn (Neil Young, John Prine, Sheryl Crow).
