WANYI reminisces on the downtempo groove “Loved You Once”

We’re obsessed – Wonderland

Singer-songwriter WANYI is continuously proving herself to be an exciting new voice on the music scene. Following the release of her euphoric single “Our Escape”, the young artist is back with the bittersweet “Loved You Once” – ushering in her debut EP.

Lavished with smooth R&B melodies and glittering pop rhythms, “Loved You Once”’s downtempo groove allows WANYI’s vocals to take centre-stage, showcasing her rich vocal prowess. Experimenting with a slightly different tone from her previous glossy pop numbers, WANYI continues to write from the heart – guiding the listener into her artistic world.

“‘Loved You Once’ is about meeting someone who I used to be close to, and realising that we’ve both grown and drifted apart”, she offers. “Although feelings have changed, I’m still grateful to have met that person. It’s quite nostalgic and bittersweet.”

Inspired by pop icons such as Troye Sivan, Ariana Grande and Zara Larsson, WANYI draws inspiration from love and relationships to create richly romantic soundscapes. Growing up in Hong Kong, WANYI started writing songs at just 10 years old – finding companionship and security within the multifaceted artform. Music has always been her oldest friend, helping her overcome periods of loneliness, frustration and isolation. Rather than let these negative experiences consume her, WANYI channels these moments of hardship into her songwriting – creating candid, heartfelt narratives.

With support from Wonderland, tmrw, Clash, Spindle, Notion and Sassy Hong Kong, “Loved You Once” invites you into WANYI’s glistening pop realm.

Loved You Once” is set for release 19th November, with her EP to follow in February 2021.
