Umma Review

Umma is a film by Iris K. Shim starring  Sandra Oh, Fivel Stewart, and Dermot Mulroney. A Story of Amanda (Sandra Oh) a mother who has not spoken to or seen her mother in years. She lives her life with her daughter Chris (Fivel Stewart) raising bees and selling honey.  She receives a visit from her uncle to inform her of her mother’s passing and bring her her mother’s ashes.

Amanda’s relationship with her mother was not a healthy one.  A significant root of her own issues being a mother the fear of becoming her mother. The fear of becoming her mother and the feeling of guilt for not seeing her before she passes. She starts to feel her mother’s presence and sees her.  Missing with her head knowing she must uphold her family’s traditions.

Chris is starting to ask questions about who came to visit and not know the truth od her grandmother and mother’s issues. She told lies about her and now will uncover the truth. She will learn the painful life they both lived and why her mother is the way she is. Not before Umma gets ahold of her daughter to show her granddaughter how to respect.

A great film overall a real look into a broken family and shows no one comes from a perfect family. I give this one a 7 out of 10 for the story Sandra and Fivel portray their roles to perfection. Be sure to check this one out now on digital and on May 24th on Dvd and Blu Ray. Here are the official details of the release.
