The Tobin Center launches a Musical Movie Marathon for October

(San Antonio, TX) Do you miss Broadway musicals? Well we do too! The Tobin Center for the Performing Arts announces a Musical Movie Marathon for the month of October! Eight movies total – featuring stage to screen musical movies on Friday evenings (7:30PM) and family musical movies on Sunday matinees (2PM). https://www.tobincenter.org/tobin-musical-movie-marathon

GA Tickets are on-sale now for $5 each. Box seating packages are also available which include a non-alcoholic drink and popcorn in addition to the seating ticket. Because of social distancing, tickets are limited. Social distancing seating will be in effect and all Covid health and safety precautions will be in place.

The Great Escape! – Fridays at 7:30PM. The Broadway musical has long been a form of escape for many people. Imagining a place in time when music and dance could instantly break out to perfectly describe mood of the moment, is all that many need to escape the day to day stress and struggles of daily life. Add a world-wide pandemic onto that stress pile and it becomes obvious that what people need right now is a MUSICAL MARATHON ESCAPE!

Friday October 2nd CHICAGO

The winner of six Academy Awards including Best Picture, this glittering tale of Jazz Age murder features everything from a star-studded cast to some of the best performances of Chicago‘s popular musical numbers and Fosse moves. The Broadway stage musical,

with music by John Kander, lyrics by Fred Ebb, and book by Ebb and Bob Fosse, is based on a 1926 play of the same name. The musical had its Broadway premiere in 1974 at the 46th Street Theater where it ran for 600 performances. It was revived in 1996 and currently holds the record as the longest running musical revival. It has won 13 Tony Awards and 6 Drama Desk Awards.

Friday October 9th RENT

Based on the successful ’90s Broadway hit, Rent follows the story of a group of Bohemian friends living in New York City at the dawn of the 1990’s — and even includes some of the original Broadway cast members (including Idina Menzel from Frozen) in a terrific stage- to-screen adaptation. Rent is a rock a rock musical with music, lyrics and book by Jonathan Larson, loosely based on Giacomo Puccini’s 1896 opera La Boheme. The Broadway musical had its premiere at the Nederlander Theater in 1996. It has won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama and the Tony Award for Best Musical. The motion picture features most of the original cast members from the Broadway run.

Friday, October 16th. EVITA

Based on the successful 1978 Broadway hit, Evita depicts the life of Eva Perón, the second wife of Argentine President Juan Perón, detailing her beginnings, rise to fame, political career and death at the age of 33. The movie stars Madonna and Antonio Banderas. Evita is a musical with music by Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyrics/book by Tim Rice. The musical began as a rock opera concept album in 1976 and led to a Broadway musical premiere in 1979 winning seven Tony Award including Best Musical.

Friday, October 23rd SWEENEY TODD- THE DEMON BARBER OF FLEET STREET

Just in time for Halloween! Sweeney Todd is a 2007 musical slasher film directed by Tim Burton and an adaptation of Stephen Sondheim and Hugh Wheeler’s Tony Award- winning 1979 musical of the same name. The film retells the Victorian melodramatic tale of Sweeney Todd, an English barber and serial killer who murders his customers with

a straight razor and, with the help of his accomplice, Mrs. Lovett, processes their corpses into meat pies. The film stars Johnny Depp as the title character and Helena Bonham Carter as Mrs. Lovett. The Broadway musical opened on Broadway in 1979 and in

the West End in 1980. It won the Tony Award for Best Musical and Olivier Award for Best New Musical. It has since had numerous revivals.
