The Tobin Center for the Performing Arts presents Doc Watkins with Strings, featuring The Classical Music Institute Orchestra

San Antonio, TX) The Tobin Center for the Performing Arts presents Doc Watkins with Strings, featuring The Classical Music Institute Orchestra for a socially distanced performance with very limited capacity, one night only in the H-E-B Performance Hall on Wednesday, March 10, 2021 at 7:30PM.

Join Doc Watkins and his Quartet with the Classical Music Institute Orchestra for an unforgettable night at the Tobin Center. Doc will perform new arrangements of Jazz, TX audience favorites, accompanied by the string orchestra. The program will feature melodies by Gershwin, Debussy, Nat King Cole, Doc Watkins, and more.

Member pre-sale is happening now. Tickets go on sale to the public Friday, March 5 at 10am and can be purchased online at www.tobincenter.org, by phone (210) 223-8624 or in-person at the Tobin Center Box Office (100 Auditorium Circle, 78205).  Box Office hours are Monday-Friday 10a-6p and Saturday, 10a-2p.  Tickets are $39.50, $49.50 and $59.50.

Doc Watkins is a pianist, vocalist, bandleader, and the owner of Jazz, TX. He also co-hosts the weekly radio show, “Live at Jazz, TX” which airs Saturday nights on Texas Public Radio. Watkins currently performs over two hundred shows per year with multiple groups under his name and has released seven albums to date, covering multiple genres including Classical, Jazz, Blues, and Texas Swing.

Watkins received his Master’s and Doctoral degrees in Music Performance from the University of Texas at Austin and moved to San Antonio in 2006. He has toured extensively throughout the U.S., Canada, Russia, and Europe, and has performed twice at Carnegie Hall.

In 2016, Watkins opened his own music venue, Jazz, TX, and performs there regularly with his groups. Deeply committed to the heritage and tradition of Texas music, Watkins includes a wide variety of styles at Jazz, TX including Jazz, Blues, Texas Swing, Mariachi, Salsa, and Folk music. His latest album release features Big Band arrangements of classic Texas Swing tunes.

Watkins currently resides in San Antonio with his wife, Jessica, and their four children. He is a self-declared enthusiast of Texas BBQ.

Established as the education program of the Chamber Orchestra of San Antonio, CMI debuted in summer 2016. CMI provides classical music education to Bexar County’s youth during a two-week and year-long outreach program. With the success of our summer education program, the long-term goal is to partner with local school districts to establish a year-round, accredited institute by fall 2020.

CMI’s mission is to cultivate classical music education and performance as a gateway to the arts and are a resident company of the Tobin Center for the Performing Arts.

 

Health and safety protocols:

  • All attendees will be temperature screened before entry. Patrons with elevated temperatures will not be allowed to enter.
  • All attendees must wear a mask for entrance and anytime they are away from their seats or designated areas. (Masks will be provided to those without).
  • No outside food or drinks
  • No large purses, backpacks or bags
  • Touch free payments and ticket scanning
  • Restroom and elevator occupancy limited and monitored at all times
  • Frequent cleaning on touch surfaces and use of electrostatic disinfectant devices
  • Multiple touchless hand sanitizer locations are available throughout the venue.
  • Plexi guards in place for concessions, patron services and box office.
  • Seating in the H-E-B Performance Hall will be every other row with two seats empty between parties for adequate social distancing.
  • Floor markers for social distancing will be in place at all queuing locations- Parking garage elevator lobbies, Tobin elevator lobbies, concessions, patron services, merchandise locations, restrooms, and box office.
  • Social distance spacing will be maintained on the Will Naylor Smith River Walk Plaza and the Carlos Alvarez Studio Theater.
  • Tobin Center staff and volunteers will be temperature screened before entering the theater and will not be allowed to enter if elevated
  • Tobin Center staff and volunteers will wear face masks at all times.
