The story of Christopher Reeve is an astonishing rise from unknown actor to iconic movie star, and his definitive portrayal of Clark Kent/Superman set the benchmark for the superhero cinematic universes that dominate cinema today. Reeve portrayed the Man of Steel in four ‘Superman’ films and played dozens of other roles that displayed his talent and range as an actor, before being injured in a near-fatal horse-riding accident in 1995 that left him paralyzed from the neck down.
After becoming a quadriplegic, he became a charismatic leader and activist in the quest to find a cure for spinal cord injuries, as well as a passionate advocate for disability rights and care, all while continuing his career in cinema in front of and behind the camera, and dedicating himself to his beloved family.
I was able to sit down and watch this new documentary on my streaming app Max. I’m a huge Superman fan as I have seen all Superman movies featuring Christopher Reeve. I remember as a young child remember hearing about Superman getting hurt and can’t walk anymore. I remember that was the talk everyone in my elementary school were talking about. Now, watching this documentary, gave me a better insight of who is Christopher Reeve and what he did after his accident. I couldn’t stop watching the documentary as I watched who the man Christopher Reeve became while being a huge advocate for disability rights. He was able to help others with his foundation and help others get the help they need. His fundraising efforts helped others that needed the help the most that wasn’t able to get the help. I really appreciate what he did and being that advocate. Also, I didn’t realize his best friend was Robin Williams and how his friend was there for him since the beginning. They have been in theater productions together and were there for each other in life.
Christopher Reeve was an extraordinary man, who was Superman, on and off the television screen. He was there helping others and making sure they are taken care of. He gave his voice to others and helped secure funding and rights for the people that needed it. An amazing story others should watch on Max!
My Thoughts
Pro:
- Robin Williams
- I didn’t realize his best friend was the comedic legend Robin Williams. They did theater together and helped each other in the life. Robin made sure to help his best friend Christopher in various ways including helping him fundraise, advocate, and many more.
- Advocate for Disability Rights
- Many disabled people didn’t have much advocating for years and funding to help with life long care. Christopher Reeve, now disabled, saw what was going on and experienced that. He made sure to advocate for the disabled and help bring to light funding issues and rights.
