Sundae Gaming Retrospect!

A New limited series I’ll be doing is reviewing classic titles and playing them throughout the week and giving my thoughts on them every Sunday. With the Covid-19 happening, I hope this takes you away from the world for a bit and gives you a bit of entertainment to where you may revisit one of these retro titles I decide to play and review.  With that said for this sundae, I decided to revisit an oldie but a goodie to me Comix Zone!

About Comix Zone: Sketch Turner is an artist in New York City. One night, Sketch is drawing during a huge thunderstorm in the city. A bolt of lightning comes through the roof and hits Sketch’s image, and brings it to life. That image is Mortus, a megalomaniac mutant who wants to become real and rule the earth. Mortus magically transports Sketch into the pages of his comic book so that he can end his creator’s life and become real. Inside the comic book, Sketch meets General Alissa Cyan, who believes he is a superhero that came to save their post-apocalyptic world from the evil brought by Mortus’ hand. Now that he’s a comic book superhero, Sketch can kick some serious butt. Instantly, Sketch can fight like a one-man mercenary platoon!

My Overall Thoughts & Review

Comix Zone is a super fun great beat ’em up genre game that at its time was missed by a portion of people who were already transitioning over to other consoles but now is solidly praised with all its mobile & console port overs. It’s a great combination of comic and video game for example when your fighting enemies you’ll see mortus hand come on screen and start drawing more enemies in the comic panel you are currently in. The 8bit Grunge music is unique and awesome as well while kicking butt and being the hero in sketches comic! There are 3 episodes total in the game with 2 comic pages in each episode, the game is short but is a great fun time in its execution. Comix Zone is a great game and I can only hope for a part 2 or even a remaster of this awesome comic journey!

Some Fun Easter Eggs & Facts

  • The SEGA logo during the game’s introduction is blue in the Japanese release, but white in the international release.
  • After pausing for a short period, sketch will develop a speech bubble that reads “Sega!”
  • After clearing a panel of all enemies, pressing the down button rapidly will cause Sketch to fart.
  • The game is hidden within the Japanese version of Sonic Mega Collection and can be unlocked in all versions of Sonic Mega Collection Plus by having a Sonic Heroes game save, or starting all other Genesis games at least 50 times.
