Rising Star Indira May Infuses Jazzy Tones with Indie and Electronic Flair On New EP ‘Imaginary Problems’

Independent artist Indira May is captivating the music scene with her distinctive voice and innovative sound. Combining elements of jazz, indie, and electronic music, Indira’s work is influenced by an eclectic range of artists, from the introspective songwriting of Joni Mitchell and Billie Holiday to the experimental sounds of Radiohead and James Blake.

Her recent collaborative project, ‘Disconnected’, created with artist/producer Saffron, gained significant traction, earning praise from BBC Radio 6 DJ Jamz Supernova, who celebrated the EP and named Indira as an ‘artist spotlight’ at the end of 2023. This recognition set the stage for the release of her highly anticipated solo EP, Imaginary Problems, a collection of five captivating tracks produced by the talented Rebecca Le Montais.

The EP’s opening track, ‘don’t feed the sharks’, is a psychedelic synth-pop gem that was featured as ‘Track of the Day’ on BBC Introducing Sussex & Surrey and played in H&M stores across the UK. Indira’s haunting, sultry vocals and unique arrangements immediately draw listeners in. Following this, the second single, ‘childsplay’, delves into the deeply personal subject of chronic illness, shedding light on the struggles of endometriosis – a condition affecting 1 in 10 women. The haunting, eerie production underscores the raw vulnerability of the song.

The third track, ‘STOP’, captures an irresistible blend of vulnerability and emotional intensity, driven by Indira’s whispery tones and hypnotic, dub-inspired horns, a collaboration with the up-and-coming producer Belfort. Indira’s playful side shines in the next single, ‘dance tonight’, a quirky bossanova piece that perfectly showcases her sharp, witty lyrics and unapologetic horn section. The track was a standout hit, landing in Spotify’s popular ‘Jazz UK’ playlist, as well as ‘Fresh Finds’ and ‘Jazz Fresh Finds’.

Rounding out the EP is ‘you & charlie’, a heartfelt ballad that narrates the complex emotions surrounding addiction. With a storytelling approach that resonates with listeners, the song unfolds like a poignant and relatable tale, showcasing Indira’s versatility and lyrical depth.

As she continues to evolve as an artist, Indira is exploring new sonic landscapes, adding DJing and music production to her repertoire. With plans for new projects in 2025, fans can expect a wave of innovative sounds and compelling narratives that push the boundaries of genre.
