QUEEN OF THE RING: WRESTLING DRAWINGS BY JAIME HERNANDEZ (1980–2020) Review

This book is one of my favorite wrestling books I have ever read! Queen of the Ring: Wrestling Drawings is a book filled with various illustrations from Jaime Hernandez. Each illustration has a focus on women’s wrestling in the 60’s and late 70’s in a lucha libra style.  Jaime had done an interview in 2020 to explain his vision and that interview was used as the vocal reading material in this book.

As a fan of wrestling, I would envision storylines for my favorite wrestlers on who they should face, how they the match operates and a continuation of a storyline that would lead to new opponents and more. This is a way of character development where fans can fall in love with their favorite wrestler but see their attributes and wrestling style play beforehand. This play is not shown through words or videos, but through the actions of that wrestler done in the ring.

Jaime would create his own characters, fake magazine’s, storylines and more for his drawings. He would then implement new wrestlers such as second and third generation wrestlers to the mix in his drawings. I was in awe in his creativity in his wrestling knowledge but the longevity of the storylines for the wrestlers he created.

This book is a must have for wrestling fans of all ages!!!
