OPERATION: TANGO TO BE SHOWCASED IN THIS WEEK’S THE MIX NEXT AND INDIECADE
Clever Plays’ Award-Winning Cooperative Espionage Adventure Highlights Teamwork, Offering an ‘Escape Room-esque’ Experience.
“These popular showcases are an amazing way to help the public discover and try smaller indie and experimental games they might otherwise miss,” commented Mattieu Bégin, co-founder and lead designer at Clever Plays. “This year, with the lack of in-person events and so much focus on next-gen platforms, such opportunities are more important than ever in terms of building awareness. We’re honored to have Operation: Tango included, and hope people will download the free demo, recruit a friend, and give it a try.”
Operation: Tango, the winner of this year’s “Best Multiplayer Award” at Gamescom, takes an innovative approach to the co-op game genre, requiring two players to collaborate closely, with one in the role of “Agent” and the other in the role of “Hacker”. Linked via voice communications and an augmented, fully-connected world, each has a different play experience, leveraging each other’s skills to infiltrate, investigate, and eradicate the forces threatening the free world.
Teamwork and verbal communication are at the center of the experience, with dialog between players being key to the progression of the game. Only by sharing the vantage points of each role can players overcome the many challenges that stand between them and completing each mission.
Founded in 2013 as a husband and wife team, Clever Plays is a 10-person indie development studio based in Montreal. Driven by a mission to create innovative games that combine solid gameplay and unique worlds. The studio’s previous title, Leap of Fate – a fast-paced rogue-lite in a magical cyberpunk setting, was well-received, earning a Metacritic score of 80.
