Filled with warped guitar melodies and sparks of electronic rhythms, “A Boy Named Johnny Gates” reflects on
the end of a romantic relationship. Ray’s vocals are confident and assertive as he navigates a life post-break
up, searching for assurance amongst the uncertainty.
“The song has a dual meaning. On one hand it's about leaving a bad relationship, and on the other it's about
leaving your ego behind. I gave my ego the fictional name of Johnny Gates”, Ray explains.
Comprised of singer-songwriter and producer Ray Rubio and guitarist Nate Thompson, the duo met through
the New York City rock climbing community. Instantly discovering a creative connection, the pair started writing
and recording together in Ray's bedroom studio. Delivering shimmering dance anthems inspired by classic
R&B melodies and the synth soaked tones of 80s pop, the pair are backed by Bronx drummer Imhotep
Williams and a rotating lineup of local musicians.
With a string of singles to follow, “A Boy Named Johnny Gates” is indication of a band on the rise.
“A Boy Named Johnny Gates” is set for release October 1st, and Nxtime are recording their debut LP
alongside "Groove is in the Heart" producer/mixer Mike Rogers.
