Inspired by music from the 60s and 80s, Laughing Cats cites legendary acts like The Beatles, The Velvet Underground, The Troggs, The Zombies, and New Order as their greatest influences. Tony and Lauren share a deep connection to these eras, which they describe as periods of musical renaissance. This reverence for classic rock and new wave is woven throughout their upcoming album, but it’s their modern, genre-bending approach that truly sets them apart.
The new single, ‘Jerk’ explores themes of self-reflection and growth within relationships. Written by Lauren, the track was inspired by a male acquaintance whose story of personal evolution struck a chord. “It’s a human story,” Lauren says. “We’ve all been in a position where we needed to self-reflect, change our behaviour, and evolve, whether for ourselves or for the sake of others. ‘Jerk’ is an anthem to that journey.” While originally envisioned as a song sung from a male perspective—Lauren even imagined Matt Shultz from Cage the Elephant as the voice—the universal message resonates regardless of gender.
Following ‘Jerks’, the Laughing Cats’ upcoming album, Funny Money, promises to take listeners on an 11-track journey through a mix of pop, rock, and new wave influences. The duo’s goal is to celebrate the past while forging their own path toward the future.
