Kingdoms of Amalur: Re-Reckoning

By Juan M Carrillo

Kingdoms of Amalur: Re-Reckoning is a stylized RPG action game that has some history. The game was developed by Big Huge Games as well as 38 studio and published by EA studios; sadly it was the only game released by 38 studios after filing for bankruptcy. Just released on steam however by now the owners of the IP, Big Huge Games KAIKIO and THQ Nordic this month it is essentially a re-make of the 2012 game that was released back in the days of the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. This game has some creatives minds and designers most notable Todd McFarlane, which has some notable works in comic books such as the Amazing Spider-Man and the Hardcore Horror comic and best-known work Spawn. This game being out for this long is a shame that I had never played it until now. It is a vast colorful world with unique characters and story.

As I mention the game originally came out for the PS3 and Xbox 360, the year was 2012 and most us were wondering if the Mayans were right and the world was going to end in December. Me I was getting ready to move and start collage and I was unaware about this game existence. Which is a shame Because I would have love to play the original. When I started up Re-Reckoning and started playing imminently the visual art style pop out and was blown back on how much video game graphics have improve since 2012. Re-Reckoning offers a fresh new look to the game but is still able to pull that stylized charm look that most of the games of the era pulled and brought back some great memories from other games that I played. As a long time, gamer I believe one of the huge pay offs of gaming is being nostalgic about games you played in the past and this re-master delivers as it reminds me of other games of the era.

Re-Reckoning has a story that is totally unique and filled with rich lore. Its opening sequence lets you know the tone of the game building up to the character creation. Here are your standard open world action RPG character creation options. Customizing your character with the different classes and options. Then it processive to teaching you on how to control your character. Now I am not a huge PC gamer, so I do not like using the keyboards to play videogames, but this does not take away from gameplay. The controls are simple and easy to control which even a novice like myself can master. If I had to pick something that I do not like about the controls and I am really grasping at straws is the camera movements, it is a bit to lose and shaky for me unlike most Action RPGS.

Overall Kingdoms of Amalur: Re-Reckoning is one of those rare games that definitely deserves more attention than it original got. It delivers a lot of what games of its genre should offer, A rich back story, unique character classes, and rich visuals. And that is just the tip of it there is so much more that it hard to summarize in one article. Honestly its hard picking one thing that I don’t like about this game other than using the keyboard and camera but my biggest complaint in any is that the dialogue is a bit slow and not the greatest voice acting compare to some other games, and that is just me nitpicking at it. I highly recommend this game if you want a break from high super-realistic games out there.
