Joel and Ethan Coen’s The Big Lebowski Puts on a Bathrobe and Heads Back to Movie Theaters Nationwide August 5 and 8 Only

  • WHAT: The world has changed in 20 years, but for movie lovers there has been one constant: The Dude abides. On Sunday, August 5, and Wednesday, August 8, the yearlong TCM Big Screen Classics series from Fathom Events and Turner Classic Movies (TCM) marks the 20th anniversary of The Big Lebowski by presenting the film in cinemas across the country. In addition to the feature content, TCM Primetime Host Ben Mankiewicz will provide brand-new commentary before and after the film.

Part noir crime drama, part absurdist comedy and utterly, uniquely Coen, The Big Lebowski is almost impossible to define – except as a modern classic, which in 2014 was named to the esteemed National Film Registry of the Library of Congress.

Beginning with a quest for a rug that has been – to put it gently – soiled, Jeff Lebowski (Jeff Bridges) and his buddy Walter Sobchek (John Goodman) take a wild trip through Los Angeles and embroils them in a sordid tale of greed, intrigue, bowling, White Russians, a severed toe and the other Lebowski – the big one (David Huddleston). Inspired by the writings of Raymond Chandler, The Big Lebowski is a singular achievement from the singular filmmaking team of Joel and Ethan Coen.
