Interview:
What is your inspiration to write your music? Is it your
surroundings?
I think it’s a combination of lots of different things! I’ve always wanted to just try and be a positive influence on the world, so what really motivates me is the thought of being able to make someone’s day more enjoyable for 3-4 minutes, because there’s lots of music that has had that effect on me!
What type of music did you listen to growing up?
My dad was always playing Simon & Garfunkel in the house when we were growing up, lots of Cat Stevens and Tom Waits too! When I started to find my own music, it sort of started with bands like Thin Lizzy, ACDC, Guns N Roses and branched out from there! As a teenager, my most listened to bands were probably Guns N Roses and Alter Bridge, nowadays it’s a lot of The Beatles.
Is there someone you looked up as a hero?
As a teenager, Slash was my absolute idol. He had it all, the tone, the look, the mysteriousness…he was just cool! Now, Myles Kennedy is a huge hero of mine, his songwriting is fantastic and he just seems like a very humble and genuine person. Traits not often found in showbusiness!
If you weren’t a musician, what would you be doing today?
That’s a tough one, I’ve really been a professional musician since I was a teenager. When I was about 13 I really wanted to be a soldier, so maybe that would have been the path I went down if I hadn’t decided to grow long hair.
What advice do you have for our fans out there that want to create
music?
Do it, and make mistakes along the way! Too many people (myself included) are afraid of writing or releasing stuff until it’s perfect, but that day will never come. You just have to start creating, make mistakes along the way and enjoy the process.
