Here is our interview with Singer – Songwriter Sophia!

  1. What is your inspiration to write music?
Life. I’ve never written a song that wasn’t inspired in some way, shape, or form by an experience. Whether or not that’s a strength or a weakness depends on who you ask. Songwriting has always been an outlet for me. I don’t decide when it’s time to write and I don’t decide what to write about. I just wait until I know that I have to, and then I sit down with my guitar.

  2. What type of music did you listen to growing up?
Growing up, I was raised on classic rock (thanks, dad)-  Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, and also Fleetwood Mac, Queen, that sort of thing. I also listened to songwriters like Bob Dylan and Joni Mitchell. I really just listened to what my parents listened to. I wasn’t really aware until I was a little older that there was other music out there. I loved it though, I still listen to those artists today. I honestly don’t think I would be able to write music had I been listening to more mainstream stuff (not that there’s anything wrong with that!)

  3. Is there someone you looked up to as a hero?
I have always looked up to my parents. I think I feel this way because they have always been there for me. Since my childhood, we’ve had a relationship where I’ve felt like I could talk to them about anything. There is a sense of trust and mutual respect. We’ve been through a lot together, but we understand each other. I realize this is something not everyone has growing up. I’m really grateful. I could never have gotten this far without their support.

  1. If you weren’t a musician, what would you be doing today?
That’s a hard question, because I have a really hard time picturing myself doing anything else. Another passion of mine is animal welfare/wildlife conservation, so maybe something in that realm. I also love nutrition and fitness (I used to be a kickboxing instructor) so maybe that industry. I feel really lucky to be able to pursue music, though.

  1. What advice do you have for our fans out there that want to create music?
Research research research! I can’t stress that enough. The best way for you to get yourself out there is to understand as much about the industry as possible. Knowing your trajectory and what needs to get done in order to achieve your goals (and also what those goals are) is very empowering. Also, be authentic. Give yourself time to really figure out who you are as an artist, and what kind of message you want to put out into the world. Be patient with yourself. It’s a hustle, and it doesn’t happen over night. Oh, and network! The music industry is tiny, you’ll realize that very quickly. It’s always good to have people in your corner who know a thing or two.
