Interview:
What is your inspiration to write your music? Is it your
surroundings?
The global stage inspires me daily, as does the deeper meaning of our existence, both here on Earth and cosmically. And of course my family, who fill my life with beautiful moments every day, but also questions and challenges.
What type of music did you listen to growing up?
My first introduction to music was when I was about eight years old; my older sisters played records by Little Richard, James Brown, and the Rolling Stones. Later, when my older brother was already going out to the local (hard) rock pub—I was about 12 at the time—he brought home music by Rory Gallagher, but also Blue Öyster Cult, which greatly intrigued me and encouraged me to go to the record store to discover music. That is how I collected hundreds of LPs by blues rock and hard rock artists from the seventies, but my brother-in-law introduced me to Hawkwind’s Space Ritual and Pink Floyd’s Ummagumma, which sparked even more interest in me, and subsequently led me to discover Psychedelic Spacerock, Symphonic rock, and progressive rock.
Is there someone you looked up to as a hero?
I certainly do; in my younger years, Rory Gallagher was my hero, but the deeper I delved into music, the more great musicians I discovered. I have great admiration for David Gilmour and Pink Floyd, and I also think Frank Zappa and Allan Holdsworth are amazing, but as a guitarist, Jeff Beck is my great hero. Jeff extracts notes from the guitar that are accompanied by great precision and control and always remain melodic; he was a true string innovator.
If you weren’t a musician, what would you be doing today?
I was probably innovative in the manufacturing industry then.
What advice do you have for our fans out there that want to create
music?
Follow your heart and do what you are naturally good at; that is where you will find the least resistance.
