Today, we sat down with Ryan from DEM to talk inspiration to write music, advice for musicians, and more!
Interview:
What is your inspiration to write your music? Is it your
surroundings?
Ryan : Its quite a few things. Ideas are generally born out of personal experiences, books, movies and even other music or beats. Our previous release I, Human was inspired by Iassc Asimov’s I,Robot. We took a twist on the story and made it our own. Eyes Wide Shut from the new album is based on he personal experiences of people whom we know:
Lyrically, Vivek, takes the lead. We give him an idea or the inspiration and he gets the words done.
What type of music did you listen to growing up?
Ryan : We all grew up with 80’s synth pop, rock ballads and what not. I started out with whatever was on the radio then. I discovered metal through my older brother in the late 80’s and never looked back since.
Is there someone you looked up as a hero?
Ryan: Not anymore per se, but there are many inspirations. Chuck Schuldiner for his music my mother who brought us up almost single handedly and bravely fought cancer. There are so many heroes out there that no one really recognises – especially those who have overcome suicide and depression and try to live a normal life
If you weren’t a musician, would you be doing today?
Ryan: My day job is in technology, so I guess that would be it
What advice do you have for our fans out there that want to create
music?
Don’t give up, don’t rely on TikTok “hacks”. Create your own sound and vibe. Gear is great, but if you can make a $50 guitar sing, then the path is your own.
