Interview with Breakthrough Even

Interview with Breakthrough Even

Today, we sat down with the band Breakthrough Even to talk music inspiration, heroes growing up, and what they be doing if they weren’t a musician. Be sure to check out their music below after the interview!

Here is the interview:

What is your inspiration to write your music? Is it your surroundings?

Zach: Yeah I think our experiences and just the things we go through day to day really are the things we draw from. I think we are both a bit introspective so having that dialogue with ourselves also lends itself to the creative process. We are both very visual people so being able to kind of visualize these themes and messages we want to explore helps with the ways we want to express ourselves.

Josh: I’ll second what Zach said. Though for me personally sometimes my inspiration can be less from my surroundings and more from books I’m reading, movies or tv shows I’m watching, or visual artwork that just hits me a certain way and leads me down a particular train of thought that will eventually work its way into our music.

What type of music did you listen to growing up?

Josh: We don’t really come from a musical family, so growing up we were just exposed to basically anything that was popular on the radio. Our mom really enjoyed listening to these huge 90s artists like Celine Dion or Michael Bolton, so that’s the kind of stuff we were used to for a while. It wasn’t until we started discovering nu-metal in the early 2000s that we found songs and bands that we connected with and that inspired us to develop a closer relationship with heavier music. I can’t speak for Zach, but I actually love a lot of the older 90s pop songs/ballads now!

Is there someone you looked up as a hero?

Josh: Definitely John Petrucci from Dream Theater. His guitar playing hardcore inspired me to develop a more regimented practice routine to develop my own playing and just Dream Theater as a whole opened up my mind to music that I previously hadn’t even realized was a thing. Petrucci approaches all aspects of his music in a very involved way, from songwriting all the way to the final mix, and that’s always inspired me to do the same for ours.

If you weren’t a musician, what would you be doing today?

Zach: To be honest, no idea really. We have other artistic outlets that we enjoy like graphic design and videography so most likely we would be a bit more invested in those fronts.

What advice do you have for our fans out there that want to create music?

Zach: I mean, for us it’s really just been to stay consistent. The only way to get better is to just do, so start writing, practice, and keep at it. The time is going to pass regardless, so don’t waste a second doubting or being hung up on where you’re at! Just keep creating and putting yourself out there.
