Interview:

How did you get your start in music?

I come from a family of musicians. Growing up I was put in church from a very young age and surrounded by music 24/7. My dad was a drummer, my grandmother is a piano teacher, my grandpa is an Elvis impersonator (still performing at 70 years old!), the list goes on. I would always tag along at Papa’s shows and watch him perform. We would sing together in the garage for hours. I knew I wanted to be a singer the first time he let me sing on stage!

What type of music did you listened to while growing up?

I was so fortunate to have exposure to a huge variety of genres from a young age. Whether it was gospel music at church, oldies or Elvis music at my Papa’s shows, I loved it all! My Dad listened to a lot of R&B when I was growing up, and he introduced me to the pop divas that I have idolized my whole life- Mariah, Whitney, Celine, all the greats. My dad’s house was a Christian household, so my music was pretty sheltered for the most part. Around 10 years old I got an iPod touch and downloaded the Bing Music app (it doesn’t exist anymore) and I would go to sleep every night listening to the Top 100 songs of every year. I think that played a big role in my songwriting today.

What are some fun stories you can share while you’re in the studio making music?

I have kept a stuffed lamb since I was a baby and I bring her in the studio with me every time I perform. I guess you could say I am a kid at heart.

What is the latest song or album you can share with us?

Blindhorse Blues is my first solo single and I am so incredibly proud of it. I wrote this song in January of last year and just dreamed of bringing it to life. I recorded it in Nashville with Brandon Manley in August and could not be happier with the final product. The song is based on a honky tonk bar in my hometown that has been around for much longer than I have. It was my mom’s old stomping grounds and I’ve had my share of nights there too.
