Interview:

How did you get your start in music?

My mom is a music teacher and my dad played guitar so music was a huge part of our household growing up. Initially, piano was required in our home and after a few years of that, I was drawn to the guitar through my dad. When he got sick of me as king to play his guitar, he bought me my own. After that, I was completely hooked.

What type of music did you listen to while growing up?

I listened to all types of music and I still do. My mom spent a lot of time in the classical music world so I heard quite a bit of that as a result. Aside from classical music, much of what was played in the house was contemporary Christian music and unbeknownst to me at the time, many of my now-favorite session players actually played on a lot of that stuff. However, everything changed when I picked up the G3 Live CD (Joe Satriani, Eric Johnson, and Steve Vai-1993) from a neighbor. That CD rocked my world and I had never heard anything like it. It was all downhill from there. Once I started working at a local music store, the floodgates opened even wider—enter Van Halen, Whitesnake, etc. The list goes on and on.

What are fun stories you can share while you’re in the studio recording music?

Well, when we were tracking a tune called “Only Be Me” from this last EP, I was in the studio with Victor Broden and Zak St. John (bass and drums) and they were doing just a fantastic job. So much so, that at the end of the take I ended up using, I laughed out loud in the room and said “Not too shabby!” The drum mics picked it up and I ended up leaving it in the recording so if you listen, you can hear it. Love the way those guys ended that song!

What is your latest song or album you can share with us?
