Emerging from the sun-kissed shores of Gold Coast, Australia, the visionary artist Holy Basil unveils her latest single, ‘The Outside’, produced by Alex Kewley from Altitude Music Studio. Seamlessly blending elements of Electronica, Ethereal soundscapes, and the dramatic essence of Musical Theatre, Holy Basil has crafted a unique genre she affectionately terms ‘Theatronic’.
Holy Basil embarked on her musical journey in 2020, self-producing her debut EP from her bedroom. Her talent and passion quickly propelled her to perform her sophomore EP debut at HOTA on the Gold Coast in 2022. Her debut single, ‘Over The Edge,’ released in March 2024, marked a significant milestone as she travelled and performed across the USA.
Holy Basil returns with ‘The Outside,’ a single that showcases her ability to merge electronica and cinematic soundscapes. The track features bass guitar, synths, keyboards, and her soothing vocals, creating an immersive auditory experience. The song’s production was a collaborative effort with a local producer, enhancing its cutting-edge, professional sound.
The inspiration for ‘The Outside’ stems from Holy Basil’s struggles and reflections. Experiencing a low mental state, she turned to music as a form of therapy. The lyrics emerged from a desire to return to the safety and simplicity of the womb, capturing the essence of feeling misplaced, helpless, and alone in an intense world. The songwriting process was organic, with the melody flowing naturally alongside the lyrics.
Holy Basil draws inspiration from influential artists like Björk, Kate Bush, Grimes, and David Bowie, promising listeners an immersive experience that resonates long after the music fades.
On the release, Holy Basil shares, “‘The Outside’ is an ode to the parts of us that often feel misplaced, helpless and alone in such an intense world. I wanted to recreate the feeling and anticipation of what it’s like to be inside the womb, about to birth and start a whole new crazy life that nobody can prepare you for. I have this memory of being born, it’s all dark and warm and cozy and suddenly there are all these crazy bright lights and loud strange noises, and it feels so intense that I just want to go back to the warm dark safe place. (My birth into the world was induced and I was two weeks late, so I feel that gives some credibility to how much I didn’t want to come out lol). Often when I’m sad I get this really heavy feeling of not wanting to be here so I wanted to put this song out there to bring comfort to people who’ve felt the same. There’s nothing like listening to a song about something relatable and feeling seen and heard. Writing this song was so therapeutic for me to be able to express these emotions and I hope it brings comfort to people when they’re feeling alone, fragile, sad or even a little nostalgic.”
