H-E-B CINEMA ON WILL’S PLAZA RETURNS TO TOBIN CENTER FOR THE PERFORMING ARTS

(San Antonio, Tx – May 12, 2022) The Tobin Center for the Performing Arts is pleased to announce the return of The H-E-B Cinema on Will’s Plaza the second Friday of most months on the Will Naylor Smith Riverwalk Plaza. We invite the San Antonio community to bring their own lawn chair or blanket and enjoy full concessions and bar while they watch a family friendly movie on our 32-foot LED video wall.

With generous support from H-E-B, Cinema on Will’s Plaza is a series of free public movie nights designed to foster a sense of community with accessible family-friendly entertainment.

The Tobin is committed to offering a variety of enriching opportunities for our audiences and community, with a focus on accessibility, wellness, and entertainment.

West Side Story – June 10, 2022

To celebrate Pride Month in San Antonio, The Tobin Center for the Performing Arts will be hosting a free screening of Steven Spielberg’s West Side Story (2021). An adaptation of the 1957 musical, West Side Story explores forbidden love and the rivalry between the Jets and the Sharks, two teenage street gangs of different ethnic backgrounds. The Will Naylor Smith River Walk Plaza will open at 7PM with the screening to follow at 8PM.

Bohemian Rhapsody – July 8, 2022

To celebrate Q: The music of Queen, The Tobin Center for the Performing Arts will be hosting a free screening of Bryan Singer’s Bohemian Rhapsody (2018) starring Rami Malek as the icon Freddie Mercury. A chronicle of the years leading up to Queen’s legendary appearance at the Live Aid (1985) concert in 1985, Bohemian Rhapsody is sure to be a sing-a-long extravaganza for everyone to enjoy. The Will Naylor Smith River Walk Plaza will open at 7PM with the screening to follow at 8PM.

Ratatouille – August 12, 2022

In collaboration with Culinaria San Antonio, The Tobin Center for the Performing Arts will be hosting a free screening of Disney + Pixar’s Ratatouille (2007). A rat who dreams of becoming a gourmet chef teams up with an inexperienced kitchen worker at one of Paris’ finest restaurants in this family friendly movie from directors Jan Pinkava and Brad Bird. The Will Naylor Smith River Walk Plaza will open at 7PM with the screening to follow at 8PM.

Disney’s Christopher Robin – September 9, 2022

The Tobin Center for the Performing Arts will be hosting a free screening of Disney’s Christopher Robin (2018) starring Ewan McGregor as Christopher Robin. In this family friendly adventure movie, Winnie the Pooh ventures into London to turn a middle-aged Christopher Robin’s life around with the help of Piglet, Eeyore, and Tigger. Stuck in an oppressive job that prevents him from spending time with his family, Robin is now worlds away from the atmosphere of childlike wonder that defined Hundred Acre Wood. The Will Naylor Smith River Walk Plaza will open at 7PM with the screening to follow at 8PM.

Hocus Pocus – October 14, 2022

To celebrate Halloween, The Tobin Center for the Performing Arts will be hosting a free screening of Disney’s Hocus Pocus (1993). Three 17th-century witches, hanged for their murderous crimes, are resurrected on Halloween in modern-day Salem by an unsuspecting boy, who must now figure out how to get them back in the ground in this family friendly comedy by Disney. The Will Naylor Smith River Walk Plaza will open at 7PM with the screening to follow at 8PM.

Fantastic Mr. Fox – November 11, 2022

The Tobin Center for the Performing Arts will be hosting a free screening of Wes Anderson’s Fantastic Mr. Fox (2009). Based on the beloved story by Roald Dahl, the film tells the tale of the noble, charming, and fantastic Mr. Fox who uses his wits and cunning to outfox three dimwitted farmers who tire of sharing their chickens with the crafty creature. This stop-motion comedy starring Geroge Clooney and Meryl Streep is sure to be fun for the whole family. The Will Naylor Smith River Walk Plaza will open at 6:30PM with the screening to follow at 7:30PM.

Elf – December 9, 2022

To celebrate the holiday season, The Tobin Center for the Performing Arts will be hosting a free screening of Elf (2003), the Jon Favreau comedy starring Will Ferrel and James Caan. After accidentally falling into Santa Claus’ gift sack, a human baby is raised at the North Pole, growing up to believe he is an elf. Due to his large size, the “elf” causes chaos in Santa’s workshop, forcing Kris Kringle to send him on a mission to find his human roots. This Christmas classic is sure to bring the whole family some christmas cheer. The Will Naylor Smith River Walk Plaza will open at 6:30PM with the screening to follow at 7:30PM.

Flaming Star – January 12, 2023

To celebrate Elvis Presley’s birthday, The Tobin Center for the Performing Arts will be hosting a free screening of Flaming Star (1960), a western film by Don Siegel that stars “The King” himself as the gunslinging cowboy, Pacer Burton. Sam Burton’s second wife Neddy is Indian, their son Pacer a half- breed. As a struggle starts between the whites and the Kiowas, the Burton family is split between loyalties. Neddy and Sam are killed; Pacer sides with the Indians, his half-brother Clint with the whites. The Will Naylor Smith River Walk Plaza will open at 6:30PM with the screening to follow at 7:30PM.

Annie – February 10, 2023

To celebrate Dream Week in San Antonio, The Tobin Center for the Performing Arts will be hosting a free screening of Annie (2014) starring Jamie Foxx and Quvenzhané Wallis. A New York City tycoon adopts a vivacious orphan as a PR stunt in his bid to become mayor, but the little girl becomes his saving grace by teaching him what’s truly important in life in this family friendly movie that is sure to have the whole family singing along. The Will Naylor Smith River Walk Plaza will open at 6:30PM with the screening to follow at 7:30PM.

Hidden Figures – March 11, 2023

To celebrate Women’s History Month, The Tobin Center for the Performing Arts will be hosting a free screening of Hidden Figures (2016). As the United States raced against Russia to put a man in space, NASA found untapped talent in a group of African-American female mathematicians that served as the brains behind one of the greatest operations in U.S. history. Based on the unbelievably true-life stories of three of these women, known as “human computers”, we follow these women as they quickly rose the ranks of NASA alongside many of history’s greatest minds specifically tasked with calculating the momentous launch of astronaut John Glenn into orbit, and guaranteeing his safe return. The Will Naylor Smith River Walk Plaza will open at 6:30PM with the screening to follow at 7:30PM.

Encanto – April 14, 2023

To celebrate Fiesta in San Antonio, he Tobin Center for the Performing Arts will be hosting a free screening of Disney’s Encanto (2021). Deep in the Colombian mountains, the Madrigal family possesses an extraordinary secret. Each member of the family is able to perform magic. Yet at the heart of the family is 15-year-old Mirabel, who does not seem to possess any unusual abilities. Faced with this harsh reality, Mirabel struggles to reconcile her place within her family while searching for who she truly is. This colorful, family friendly movie is sure to have everyone singing and laughing. The Will Naylor Smith River Walk Plaza will open at 7PM with the screening to follow at 8PM.

Billy Elliot: The Musical – May 12, 2023

The Tobin Center for the Performing Arts will be hosting a free screening of Billy Elliot: The Musical (2014). From director Stephen Daldry, Billy Elliot: The Musical tells the story of a gifted dancer who fights for his dreams of stardom despite pressure from society and his parents. The Will Naylor Smith River Walk Plaza will open at 7PM with the screening to follow at 8PM.
