Spokane, United States – May 14th, 2024 – Today Cyan Worlds is pleased to reveal that Riven, the classic narrative-driven puzzle game that is being updated for modern platforms, will initially launch on the Meta Quest 2 and Meta Quest 3 VR platforms, as well as Windows (VR and flatscreen) and Mac. Already announced to be coming to virtual reality, Cyan Worlds is thrilled to confirm that Riven will be coming to the Meta Quest platform.
Cyan’s from-the-ground-up remake of Myst—launched first on the Meta Quest platform in 2020—enabled players to experience the game’s iconic Ages like never before. In Riven‘s first update since 1997, players will explore the game with the same sense of immersion and freedom that comes from actually being in this world—especially on Meta Quest 3, where Riven will take advantage of the headset’s increased power and higher resolution to deliver a truly spectacular experience.
“One of the most astounding experiences for me is being fully immersed in Riven in VR with no strings attached on Meta Quest 3,” stated Cyan Worlds co-founder Rand Miller. “It’s mind-blowing to have jumped from the original static images to wrapping myself in Riven.“
Delving further into the lore that Cyan’s first game Myst only hinted at, Riven tightly integrates its puzzles into a sprawling and decaying world that plunges players into a conflict between the world’s villainous ruler and those rebelling against him. While Myst has been remade several times, the visuals, cinematics, and overall scope have made Riven difficult to adapt. Bringing the remake to Unreal Engine 5 and leveraging the capabilities of the Meta Quest system will allow both old and new fans to experience the iconic 3D world like never before.
Riven is a modern remake of 1997’s monster hit Riven: The Sequel to Myst, and a love letter to the classic narrative-driven puzzle games of the ’90s. When exploring the decaying age of Riven the player will feel like an archeologist, slowly unraveling the many mysteries revealed through careful exploration of Riven’s five enigmatic islands. Players will lose themselves in the world as they uncover clues, decipher foreign languages, and immerse themselves in the game’s intricate lore.
Combining the next-generation 3D visuals of Unreal Engine 5 and the processing power of the Meta Quest virtual reality system brings a previously unattainable level of immersion to gamers. With new puzzles, expanded storylines, and breathtaking visuals, even those who know the original by heart will find themselves lost again in its depths.

About Cyan Worlds
Founded by brothers Rand and Robyn Miller in 1987. In 1991 Cyan began work on Myst. The goal: create a new kind of experience that felt more like a place than a game. There would be no dying, no shooting, no starting over, and no inventory – dramatic breaks from “traditional” gaming. Myst was about finding yourself lost in a world, exploring it to gain understanding, and ultimately becoming part of the story. The public response was nothing short of phenomenal.
To date, sales for Myst and its sequel Riven have sold over 15 million copies worldwide. Myst also holds the honor of being the best-selling video game of the 20th century; a record that was not surpassed until 2003.
After five games in the Myst series, Cyan turned its attention to making an exciting new kind of Myst world. Uru (Myst Online) allows players to join the adventure of a lifetime in the caverns of D’ni, a neverending world that lets players connect and explore together. It spawned a thriving community and is still available to explore for free. More recently, Cyan Worlds has created titles supporting 2D and VR gameplay, including Obduction, Firmament, and a remake of Myst for 2D and VR.
Cyan Worlds looks forward to releasing their games currently in development, as well as revealing new, exciting worlds yet to come. They draw from over three decades of experience to tell stories in intriguing and unexpected ways and continue to look for innovative ways to subvert standard videogame tropes.
