Dreamstruck is Karen Krogshøj’s crystal-clear voice and cool bass riffs merging with the surf and shoegaze sounds of Jonas Struck’s Fender Jazzmaster guitars. Their grandiose and dreamy soundscapes are a gallant mixture of garage and lo-fi drum machine aesthetics swept in cinematic atmospheres.
In addition to their musical collaboration, including film scores, most recently the award-winning documentary, ‘Apolonia, Apolonia’ and the international Netflix hit-series, ‘Ragnarok’, Karen and Jonas have been a couple for many years. Even though Dreamstruck was born from a musical and creative perspective, Karen and Jonas soon realized that their new music and songs contained an undiscovered level of understanding of their relationship – from the difficult moments to the hope that creates change.
“My intention was to write lyrics about hope for change and not to dig too deep into our relationship, but as the process progressed, the lyrics got intensively closer to the core of it. It became a constructive process as we brainstormed metaphors that framed our conflicts, and the result was like a therapeutic mirror that has improved the communication between us,” says Karen Krogshøj and Jonas Struck continues:
“The smoldering ‘Volcano’ is a metaphor for passive-aggressive behavior. I tend to ignore my feelings and things that I should obviously just deal with. When Karen confronts me with my problems, that’s when I strike, ending up hurting both of us. Making this album made us open up to the vulnerabilities between us through words and music.”
In December 2024, the lead single, ‘Moon’, featuring Mathias Bertelsen hit multiple international music media while honestly addressing the vulnerability at stake between Karen and Jonas. Even though some of the songs on ‘Dreamstruck’ are about the darkest hour of a relationship, there’s also a sparkling hope in the lyrics of ‘Sun’, ‘Like a Storm,’ ‘Town of Ghosts’ and ‘Captured’, while ‘Wilderness,’ ‘Pink Wall’ and ‘Shattered Dreams’ are songs of nostalgia or new adventures.
“Love is about communication; facing your differences and difficulties and dealing with them. I guess that’s what Dreamstruck is about: a shared declaration of love,” says Karen Krogshøj.
‘Dreamstruck’ is co-produced by Brian Batz (Sleep Party People, Trentemøller), and the artwork is created by Kathrine Mills Rymer of the art collective, O Future. ‘Dreamstruck’ is released on the independent label, Sound by Struck, on January 10th and the limited black, white and marble vinyl is available for worldwide orders via Rough Trade in the UK.
