Cosplay Universe takes you inside the world of Cosplay through the people that have shaped and continue to bring to life characters through their incredible creativity. First and foremost a fan before journalist, I enjoy talking to cosplayers at conventions and events. I enjoy interviewing a few and asking about the character they are portraying, the amount of time it took to create their cosplay and much more. I feel cosplayers in general are a huge staple of conventions and events today.
We were able to get a screener copy of Cosplay Universe to check out and review. I have to admit, when I first saw this, my jaw dropped hard on the floor. I didn’t realize how hard these individuals work on their cosplays and the hard road they take to break barriers in this world today. I had to rewatch this documentary a few times just to grasp all the hard work the filmmakers did to showcase the art of cosplayers in the comic world. After watching this documentary, I have so much more respect for all cosplayers that work hard on their craft and showcase them at conventions and events. - History
- I enjoyed learning more about the history of cosplay and how it evolved to the global phenomenon it is today! I didn’t realize how much history there is to cosplay and the film makers were sure to include how it started. This documentary was filmed pre pandemic and took 6 years to create. I felt this gave viewers an idea on the long road that came for cosplayers that basically made the name “cosplay” a household name.
- Yaya Han
- I have to admit, I have heard of the name Yaya Han but never really knew in-depth of her cosplay origin story. I didn’t realize Yaya is the Hulk Hogan of cosplayers as she literally broke barriers and brought cosplay to the spotlight. Throughout the documentary, I was able to learn more about Yaya and her craft. With her ideals and dedication, she has shaped cosplay and gave a universe full of open imagination for future cosplayers today.
- World Cosplay Summit
- I never heard of World Cosplay Summit during my time attending conventions throughout the country. Learning there is a world championship for cosplaying warms my heart. There are so many dedicated individuals that bring to life fandoms through their cosplays. This display of showmanship gives these individuals to compete against the best in the world to be number 1 in cosplay. I digged this hard!
