Con and On #4-5 – An Ahoy Comics Review

By: John C. Mayberry

Honestly, purely, truthfully, not enough great things that I can say about this limited series.  After reading the first three issues of Con and On, I greatly anticipated getting the chance to read these final two issues to finish off such a great story.  For those of you that are new to the comic book lifestyle, or for observers on the outside simply looking inwards to this booming aspect of pop culture, this is a limited series that paints the perfect picture of what it’s like to be a part of such a massive experience and will make you want to be a part of it yourselves.

Between the final two issues we find ourselves in the year 2022 eventually, having the privilege to see more of how our characters’ stories unfolded, which of those became successes in their own rite, the ones who never quite made it, the fans who make the experience special, and even those who give their all to the industry.  The difference in time is vast, starting in the year 1992 at the beginning of this limited series and finishing 20 years later, but this story in issues four and five still succeeds in helping you delve deeper into the cultural phenomenon that is comics through memorable characters and writing with beautifully created illustrations.

But after finally finishing Con & On, the one thing I have to say that I enjoyed the most about this comic is how inspirational it is.  Inspirational not only in the way that it makes other would-be creators want to take that first rewarding step into uncharted territory, but also in the way that it strengthens the sense of community felt by all us comic book nerds everywhere.  And in any place I’ve ever been to, I can truly say I’ve never felt as strong a sense of community as I have anywhere else, except maybe at a comic con.  This is one limited comic book series that I quickly fell in love with because it reminds me of everything great about being a comic book nerd, as I’m sure it will do for those of you just picking up issue one for the first time.
