Today, rising indie-pop artist Cade Hoppe is unveiling the video for his new single, “Hurts.”
Underscored by swirling dream-pop production and a pulsating backbeat, Cade’s baritone vocals deliver heart-wrenching confessions about love and loss on “Hurts.” The song is written from the POV of someone who has recently broken up with their significant other, but the accompanying music video adds more context to the situation. Using a camcorder to invoke nostalgia, the “Hurts” video shows the relationship from the POV of the other party. “I wanted show the relationship through the other person’s eyes before it all fell apart,” says Cade. “It helps give a little context to the pain I’m singing about because the most painful part of any breakup, I think, is remembering those good moments that made you fall in love with each other in the first place.”
Originally hailing from Sacramento, CA and now based in New York, Cade originally moved to the East Coast to pursue academic and athletic opportunities. He’d been writing songs and playing piano, guitar, bass and saxophone since childhood, but it wasn’t until 2020 that he started to explore the possibility of recording and releasing his own songs to prioritize his true passion. After putting out a few experimental releases with his stepbrother, Nick Adams, Cade connected with producer Harper James — one half of Eighty Ninety — and began to develop his indie-pop sound.
Imagine if The National made a Taylor Swift record endorsed by Chris Martin, Jack Antonoff, and Ben Folds—now you essentially have a Cade Hoppe record. But no matter whose music inspires comparison, the 22-year-old artist sets himself apart from others in the pop landscape with his warm, baritone vocals, earnest lyricism and sticky pop melodies. He ended last year with the release of his debut EP, ‘Tell Me How It’s Worth It,’ and is now preparing for a new year filled with even more music. With his steadfast determination and undeniable talent, Cade is well on his way to becoming an indie-pop mainstay.
