Today on Variant Comics, the YouTube channel that cele- brates all things superhero, host Arris Quinones announced that Variant Comics and comiXology Originals, the exclu- sive digital content line of comiXology, an Amazon com- pany, will be releasing Astonishing Times, a new 5-issue comic series that examines the relevance of superheroes in the 21stcentury.

Award-winning writer Frank J. Barbiere, makes his return to creator-owned comics and Arris Quinones, host of You- Tube’s Variant Comics channel makes his comics writing debut. Together, they craft a modern classic that redefines superheroes for a new era.

“It’s no secret that I love superhero stories,” says Quinones. “In fact, I co-created a whole YouTube channel dedicated to them. Astonishing Times focuses on the superhero’s ability to inspire good acts and takes a look at the importance of journalism in spreading goodwill and positivity.”

Noah Sans is a young reporter at The Sentinel, working in

heroes—but no one seems to care. After a world changing

event called The Cata- clysm, people moved on, and now heroes are old news. But when Noah be- gins investigating a mys- terious murder, he comes face to face with his most revered heroes and is forced to confront a secret past that could change the world forever.

Astonishing Times will be released monthly beginning July 27, 2021 and will be available upon release, at no additional cost, for members of Amazon Prime, Kindle Unlimited, and comiXology Un- limited, and for purchase on the Amazon Kindle Store and comiXology.

“We wanted to create a project that catered to our passion for the genre and Astonishing Times is our love letter to the medium of comics and a celebration of superheroes old and new,” says Barbiere. “Together, we hope to inspire a new generation of fans young and old and remind us all that he- roes are everywhere.”

Astonishing Times issue #1 arrives July 27, 2021 and is available for pre-order from comiXology Originals.

Frank Barbiere is a former English teacher and graduate of Rutgers Uni- versity and the Graduate School for Education. He broke into the comics industry with the creator-owned hit Five Ghosts (Image Comics) and has since worked for every major publisher in the U.S., while having a global pres-

Arris Quinones is the host and co-cre- ator of Variant Comics, a YouTube channel known as the grandfather of comic channels with over 2 million subscribers and 6 million monthly views. He became passionate about comics when he was eight years old. Ever since then, he has immersed him-

self in his love for comics on a daily basis, over time becom- ing a knowledge base for all things comics. He now spreads his love and knowledge for comics on a weekly basis to mil- lions of people as one of the most influential faces in the medium.

Ruarí Coleman started out drawing comics in the indie scene of his native Ireland in 2012 before turning profes- sional. Since then, he has worked on such properties as Star Wars (for the European and U.S. markets), Teen- age Mutant Ninja Turtles (IDW) and Cloak and Dagger (Marvel). Astonish-

ing Times is Ruarí’s first project as a co-creator and he’s been thrilled to work with Frank and Arris in developing a whole new world of heroes for readers to enjoy.

Lauren Affe is a freelance artist that has been working professionally in comics since 2010. After making her debut in Dark Horse Presents, Lau- ren has worked as a colorist on titles across various publishers, such as Im- age Comics (Five Ghosts, Buzzkill, The Ghostfleet), Dark Horse Comics

(Stranger Things, Witcher of Flesh and Flame, Count Crow- ley), Aftershock Comics (The Revisionist, Dead Kings), as well as for Marvel Comics (Spider-Gwen, Bloodstone: The Star Spawned Sorcerer) and Random House (Windhaven). Lauren currently resides in Austin, Texas.

Taylor Esposito is a comic bookletter- ing professional and owner of Ghost Glyph Studios. A former letterer at DC and production artist at Marvel, he lettered titles such as Red Hood and the Outlaws, Constantine, Interceptor: Heavy Finger Guns (Vault Comics), Exorsisters, Jook Joint (Image), and Ba-

byteeth, Hot Lunch Special (Aftershock). Other publishers he has worked with include Line Webtoon, Dynamite, and IDW.

Dylan Todd is an art director, graph- ic designer, and occasional writer. He lives in a house in the desert, among the lizards and spiders. Sometimes the wind blows.
